The Delhi government on Monday ordered private and government-aided schools that have not yet closed for summer vacations despite the ongoing heatwave to do so immediately.

In a circular issued by the Directorate of Education, all schools have been instructed to observe summer vacation from May 11 to June 30 for this academic year.

“…All government schools are closed from May 11, 2024. However, it has been observed that some government-aided and unaided recognized private schools remain open during the ongoing severe heatwave.

“Therefore, all heads of government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in Delhi are advised to close their schools for summer vacation with immediate effect,” the circular stated.

Delhi has experienced a consistent rise in temperatures recently, with Sunday recording the highest temperature of the summer at 44.4 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the temperature was 43.6 degrees Celsius, up from 42.5 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwave conditions in many parts of Delhi and severe heatwave conditions in other areas, issuing a red alert for the next five days.
