New Delhi: In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Prime Minister Narendra Modi elaborated on his approach to social welfare schemes, emphasizing their role in empowering the poor while maintaining fiscal discipline.

Comparing his administration to the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Modi criticized the latter for neglecting fiscal deficit concerns, which he argued had detrimental effects on the economy and citizens.

“Those familiar with my governance in Gujarat know I am a strong advocate of financial discipline. Fiscal deficit is a key indicator of such discipline,” PM Modi stated in his conversation with NDTV Editor-In-Chief Sanjay Pugalia.

Modi highlighted the recent Budget announcement, which surprised many due to its non-populist stance, despite being an election year.

“Before the pre-election Budget was presented, media reports speculated it would be laden with freebies to secure votes. However, the actual Budget was not aimed at electioneering,” PM Modi remarked.

“I focused on development and empowering the poor, who aspire to improve their circumstances. They need support to escape poverty. During the UPA’s tenure, they disregarded fiscal deficit, leading to significant negative impacts. Adhering to fiscal discipline is crucial,” Modi explained.

The Prime Minister also noted that reducing taxes has led to increased revenue, with a growing number of taxpayers and GST enrollments. “People are more willing to pay taxes, trusting that their money will contribute to nation-building,” he said.

Regarding social welfare schemes, Modi asserted that simply launching populist programs without clear objectives does not effectively alleviate poverty.

He emphasized the importance of empowering the poor through targeted welfare schemes that enhance the quality of life. “Welfare is a crucial part of Bharat’s social infrastructure. When implemented effectively, these schemes become assets. All our welfare initiatives aim to guarantee a better quality of life. When people experience improved living conditions, they aspire for even better,” PM Modi concluded.
